What Is Internuclear Ophthalmoplegia?

This is an eye-related disease. It is caused due to weakness of the eye muscles. This deficiency is found in various age groups. It is mainly found between the early 18 to 40 years of age. When one is affected by ophthalmoplegia (กล้ามเนื้อตาอ่อนแรง, which is the term in Thai), it would be difficult to control the muscles of the eye and results in drooping eyelids.

When talking about internuclear ophthalmoplegia, it is caused due to the damage caused in the nerve fibers whose function is to coordinate the lateral eye movement. As a result, one can see clearly and observes all the objects in double.

This disease is generally caused when any disruption is caused between the eye and the brain. When something interrupts the signals which are being sent to the eyes vai brain, it causes internuclear ophthalmoplegia.

Symptoms Of Ophthalmoplegia:

When an individual is affected by ophthalmoplegia, they have a problem with vision. They either have blurred vision or double vision. It also leads to the inability to sync the eye in position. One cannot move their eyes simultaneously if one is affected by ophthalmoplegia. Symptoms of the disease include drooping eyes, difficulty in swallowing, and even general muscle weakness. It also damages the center that coordinates and controls horizontal eye movements. When one eye is affected by ophthalmoplegia, the eye on the affected side becomes motionless and remains in the middle.

Prevention Of Ophthalmoplegia:

This is the most common symptom of any other syndrome. By early tips to the eye doctor may aid the disease at the starting stage.

It is recommended to consult an eye doctor once every two years. The eye muscles are very delicate and must be taken care of. Never neglect runny eyes, it could be the sign of many eye diseases.

Diagnosis:

This disease can be diagnosed by physical examination and one needs to check the moment of the eye. MRI or CT can be preferred to check the condition of the eye more keenly.

Usually, if children are born with this deficiency, they must learn to compensate and take precautions. Adults can find an alternative like wearing special glasses, and also an eye patch would be preferable to avoid the double vision problem.

This would help to attain the normal vision. In very few cases of migraine, the outcome can be expected to have improved ophthalmoplegia.

This disorder can be cured by correcting any underlined disorders and also isolate the nerve palsies which can be resolved over a span of time.
